He is Risen!

Alfred Manessier, Mary Magdalene Sees Jesus

He is risen!
He is risen indeed.

Jesus ist auferstanden!
Er ist wahrhaftig auferstanden.

Good Friday

On this Good Friday, I want to share a painting from Alfred Manessier's Suite de Pâques with you. The artist Sandra Bowden has written a beautiful meditation on this piece and the other in the Suite at ArtWay that you can read here.

Yarn and Chalk Pastel Easter Eggs

This is a closer look at one of the art projects in this year's Easter Club. It allows for open-ended creativity as well as honing fine motor skills. I got the idea for it from a Valentine's project at one of my favorite art blogs, Art ist Basic. It is an especially good project if you are limited in time. Grades 1-3 will have no problem finishing in one setting, but kindergarten and preschool made need a little longer.

Materials needed:
- cardboard or thick paper (needs to be thick enough to   withstand the yarn being wrapped around it)
- scissors
- chalk pastels
- yarn
- egg pattern, hole puncher & pencil (optional if eggs are pre-cut)

Step 1: Pre-cut the cardboard eggs and make small slits around the border about 2 centimeters apart (which the yarn will fit into). Use the hole puncher to make a hole at the top, so the egg can be hung on an Easter tree. If you have more time and the paper is not too thick, then the children can do this part themselves with an egg pattern, pencil, scissors and hole puncher.

Step 2: Color the front of the egg with the chalk pastels. This works particularly well on cardboard. Whatever paper you use, make sure it has enough "tooth" to pick up the pigments in the pastels.

Step 3: Cut off a long piece of yarn. Starting from the back, wrap the yarn around the egg any way that you wish.

Step 4: Tie the loose ends at the back. Loop another piece of yarn through through the hole at the top, so that the egg can hang on an Easter tree.

Easter Club 2016 Week 3

For security reasons the faces of some of the children in this post are intentionally blurred.)

We spent our last week of Easter Club meeting some new friends. Jesus was always out and about and open for people, and so we want to do the same. With this in mind, we visited a Children's Club in another district of Berlin.

To get to know each other, we sat in a circle and enjoyed cookies and homemade fruit salad together.

Then, we heard a resurrection story about one of the disciples, Thomas, who sees Jesus for the first time after his resurrection.

Afterwards, some of the kids replayed the scene using their own imagination. Below to the left, you can see the resurrected Jesus standing on top of the grave, and the disciples are to the right in a circle waiting for him.

Then, we divided into two groups and either stayed inside to play games or play outside.

Foosball and board games were the hit inside.

And outside there was jump rope and parachute games!

As always, out time together went by too fast, and we would have liked to stay longer.

Wir wünschen euch allen eine schönes Osterfest!
We wish you all a blessed Easter celebration!

Easter Club 2016 Week 2

Easter Club is still going! Look what we did in Week 2!

Wo sind wir im Kirchenjahr? Wir müssen die Kirchenuhr einstellen!
What time of year is it in the church? We have to set the church clock!

Heute hörten wir Teil 2 von "Gesichter Christ":
- Jesus heilt Menschen.
Today we heard the rest of "The Faces of Easter":
- Jesus heals people.
- His last week in Jerusalem and the Last Supper.
- His death and resurrection.

We laid the pictures in a timeline, but the last picture has two sides - a sad one and a joyous one. No matter how hard you try, you can't separate them from one another. If the crucifixion was the last picture, the story would have ended. But the resurrection is the last picture and it is a new beginning. Because of that, we have to lay the pictures in a circle (below). Then the story keeps on going!

2) Steine anmalen
We added two new stations to Response Time:
1) Collage with paint and colorful popsicle sticks
2) Painting rocks

During our feast, we talked about our field trip next week. We'll be visiting an afterschool club in another part of the city. Why? Because Jesus didn't stay in the temple. He went out to meet new people. In the same way, we don't want to stay in the church. We want to get out and meet some new people, too!

Godly Play Germany Conference 2016: Day 3

It's typical for Godly Play that we come away with more questions than answers. For every "answer", a new question seems to pop up. So it was on Sunday in our plenum meeting, where we gathered all the questions from the workshops and discussed them in small groups.

Afterwards, we took part in an ecumenical worship service. We come from all sorts of church confessions - Lutherans, Catholics, Methodists, and other denominations - and this enriches the way that we worship together. Our castle, Burg-Bodenstein, has a beautiful chapel that they let us use for the service.

We hung posters of the pictures from "The Faces of Easter" around the chapel.

Dann fing die Geschichte an, die Bilder in unterschiedlichen Sprachen erzählt.
Then, we told the story in different languages.

auf deutsch, englisch, und lettisch . . .
in German, Englisch and Latvian . . .

auf norwegisch, russisch und wieder auf deutsch . . .
in Norwegian, Russian and again in German . . .

For the crucifixion and resurrection, we went outside of the chapel into the courtyard.

Around the courtyard large, wooden People of God figures were placed with sheets of paper on both sides. There we could respond to what we had heard and write what these two sides of Easter - the tragic side and the joyous side - meant to us.

After lunch we went our separate ways, but not empty-handed. We each took fresh inspiration and warm memories with us!

Godly Play Germany Conference 2016: Day 2

Our own individual journeys with God are very important to everything else we do as Godly Play practitioners. For this reason, we start each day with a communal devotion. This time, Heidi and Ruth selected beautiful hymns and a prayer that involved total body movement.

Then, it was down to business with our topic, "Theologizing with Children". Doing theology with children has long been a subject of research  in Germany and has become somewhat of a movement. And interestingly enough, most of the people in this field are knowledgeable about Godly Play. Professor Petra Freudenberger-Lötz at the University of Kassel is one such researcher and she was our speaker this weekend. Professor Freudenberger-Lötz founded a project called "Research Workshop Theology with Children" and is herself a Godly Play Storyteller.

Professor Freudenberg-Lötz presented us with her observations about the similarities and differences between the two traditions of Theology with Children and Godly Play. I was particularly impressed with her as a speaker, because she was very personable and obviously passionate about her field of expertise. (There is a cultural difference in Germany in which speakers often read their lectures aloud in order to appear more "academic", and sometimes the most interesting topic can come across as dry and boring! I was so pleased that this was not the case with Dr. Freudenberger-Lötz.)

"Theologizing" makes room for children to reflect - usually, but not limited to a verbal response - on a biblical story or some other topic. The accent in Godly Play, though, is less on a reflection and more on an identification with the story. Both traditions, however, can help a child reflect and identify, and this is why they can co-exist and complement one another. (I plan to write more about this in a later post.)

After so much food for thought, we had to talk it over in small groups . . .

In the afternoon, we met in workshops to learn more about the different aspects of Theology with Children. I was in a workshop called "Theologizing through Creative Expression", that we considered in relation to our own Response Time/Creative Phase in Godly Play.

There, our speaker, Marie Sophie Kitzinger, one of Dr. Freudenberger-Lötz's team, read us a short story aloud, and then gave us an assignment. We were to use art materials to create something that expressed what we imagined God to be like.

Then, we had a full 20 minutes without interruption to create something. Afterwards, we all agreed how good it was to have this long, uninterrupted work period. Sometimes, the Response Time/Creative Phase in GP can be too short in the rush to fit in a story and a feast, and we were reminded to how important it is to have adequate time to create and play.

In using creative express to theologize, the children are asked afterwards to show their art work. They can tell something about it if they like, but there is no pressure to do so.

In Godly Play, the children are never asked to show their work to others. If a child tells something about his/her creation, it is always in a personal conversation. We wondered together how knowing beforehand that there was a possible presentation could affect the child's creative process?

Andere Workshops waren: 1) Theologisieren im Spiel, 2) als Gespräch, 3) mit Bildern. Other workshops included: 1) Theologizing in Play, 2) Theology in Conversation, 3) Theologizing with Pictures.

. . ! The Lindenwerkstatt, that makes our Godly Play materials in Germany, was also on hand to help us craft and saw our own materials. They also brought a few things to sell, so my suitcase was twice as heavy on the way home . . .!

Hier sägt Hans-Jürgen einen Teil vom "Vater Unser". Hans-Jürgen saws some of the material for the "Lord's Prayer" story.

In the evening, there was much singing and dancing with a medieval/Celtic band (complete with bagpipes) that seemed really at home in our castle!

Godly Play Germany Conference 2016: Day 1

Every other year Godly Play Germany organizes a conference to provide fresh inspiration for our work in churches, schools and various other settings. On Friday evening, 52 people from all corners of Germany, as well as a couple of guests from Latvia and Norway, travelled to a castle-turned-retreat center called "Burg-Bodenstein" in Thuringia to encourage one another, exchange ideas and learn something new. At these conferences, we usually bring someone from outside our organization, often in a similar field, whose perspective might help grow us in our own Godly Play practice. This year's topic was "Theologizing with Children".

The pins and paper slip show where we came from . . .

We started our time together with a "get-acquainted" game, because we are, of course, Godly Play and we definitely like to play together in all kinds of ways! Then, we divided into smaller groups to hear a story.

Manche hörten "Das leere Grab", eine Ostergeschichte.
Some heard "The Empty Grave", an Easter story.

Maybe you recognize the storyteller - Markus from Gott im Spiel.

Other heard the "Feeding of the 5,000" (below) or other stories about Jesus and an adulteress and the healing of crippled woman.

After the stories, each group had the chance to respond creatively and celebrate a small feast together. As Godly Play teachers, we find it important to practice the same things that we do with the children. We wonder together after each story was well, and "wondering" with a group of Godly Play fans is an interesting and encouraging thing to behold. Each person allows his or herself to be immersed in the story and our thoughts bring fresh perspective to one another.

Maybe the best thing about our times together is the chance to meet new people and see old friends!

Easter Club 2016 Week 1

Easter Club started a week late this year, because of our family having to make an emergency trip to the States. With one week less together, I scrapped my original plans for which stories to tell and asked myself, "What is going to be best for the children in these two weeks?

I decided that it would be best to tell a longer story called "The Faces of Easter" about Jesus' life from birth to resurrection in two parts,  so that the children could have a longer response time and be able to digest the different parts of the story better.

- Jesu Taufe
- Jesu Aufenthalt in der Wüste
Part 1 of "The Faces of Easter" tells the following scenes from Jesus' life:
- Jesus as a baby
- the 12-year-old Jesus getting "lost" and being found by his parents at the temple in Jerusalem
- his baptism
- his 40 day fast and subsequent temptation in the desert

After the story, we wondered together about which parts were our favorite and which ones were most important. Which part reminded us of something in our own lives? Then, I asked the children to look around the room and see if there was an object that could tell us more about the story.

-

After our story circle, we invite each child to choose an activity that will help them to explore the story a little more. The first activity involved hammering colored pieces of wood to a cork board to make a picture.

This child included a temple like the one that the 12-year-old Jesus visited in her picture.

Another activity involved painting Easter eggs with chalk pastels and weaving yarn around it for decoration.

We also planted cress in egg shells to be used for an Easter salad!

Then, there was a table for the children to paint whatever happened to be on their hearts and minds.

We ended our time with a small feast of cucumbers, red pepper and cookies!

Bis nächster Woche! See you next week!
