Growing Easter Grass in the Shape of a Cross

Seeing beautiful, green life spring up at Easter is a marvelous way for children to draw closer to their Creator and a concrete picture for understanding the life that came from Jesus' death.

This is a wonderful idea that I found in All Together: Creative Prayer with Children. If you don't have space for a garden outside, then you need a box or crate. I used a small crate that clementines are sold in. (Some of you may remember it as the manger at Christmas!)

The next step is to seal the crate with plastic and duct tape, so that it can then be filled with dirt. Then, we used a paper pattern of a cross to tie twine  across the box in the same shape. The reason for this is to let the children know where to put the seeds and to "guide" the grass as it grow. We used a fast-growing grass called "Katzengras" ("cat grass") in German.

The children then painted the box and decorated it with Easter eggs and butterflies.

And then, we began to watch it grow . . .

and grow!

It will be a lovely present from the Easter Club children to the Senior Center next week!
